Why aren't lacrosse and field hockey athletes wearing UV protection?

Any outdoor enthusiast, in particular an athlete who spends hours each day outside, benefits from wearing ultra violet (UV) protection. UV light, invisible to the human eye, is divided into three categories UV A, B, and C. UV C, the shortest wavelength, is filtered by the atmosphere and never reaches earth. UV B is responsible for sunburns and has been linked to the development of cataracts in the lens of the eye. UV A causes changes to the deeper layers of the skin and is thought to cause wrinkling and pre-mature aging of the skin. Both UV A and B have been linked to skin cancer. In the eye, UV A and B are absorbed by the cornea and lens, while a small amount reaches the retina, the light sensitive layer of the eye. Both hard data and anecdotal evidence have shown that cumulative and long term exposure of the eye to UV radiation raises the probability of ocular disease in the cornea, conjunctiva, lens (leading to cataract formation), and the retina (risk factor in macular degeneration).

Prevent Blindness America, the American Optometric Association, and the American Academy of Ophthalmology all agree that children are at risk for ocular damage from UV radiation. Protection at an early age may prevent or delay UV induced problems that occur in later life.

Impactz Eyewear lenses are UV protected up to 400 nanometers or 100% of the UV wavelengths. As the effects of UV exposure can be immediate or cumulative over time, UV eye protection is recommended for all outdoor athletes, especially children who spend the greatest amount of time outdoors.

Impactz Eyewear recommends the Field Master 1 Lens be worn at moderate and high levels of UV when the UV index is between 5 and 10. This lens has been hand selected to not only protect the eye from impacts and sun, but to enhance vision on grass and artificial turf.
